Original single fabric, painted with fiber-reactive dyes, and subsequently cut-up and rearranged with accents of dupioni silk. Machine pieced and quilted.
The title comes, in part, from the technique I used to create the fabric (which you can see as an additional image) - I applied the dye using a scraper. The second comes from the fact that I didn't have quite enough of the primary fabric to finish the piece and had to search my stash of hand-dyes to see what could integrate with the main fabric to look as if it might have come from the same piece. I had to "scrape by" with what I had. Given that another meaning of the phrase, "to scrape by" is "to succeed at doing something, but just barely," it seemed appropriate to describe how so many people have gotten through the past two years, since the start of the pandemic.
