Creating Beauty. Building Relationships. Valuing Art.
I am an artist who makes original art quilts, abstract acrylic paintings, and mixed-media collages.
My first medium is fabric: primarily fabric that I dye myself and create using a dozen different surface design techniques. From this collection, I cut and arrange pieces on a design wall, constructing colorful and dynamic compositions. The construction is based on multiple layers: a top, or main design; a substrate (typically another fabric or a stretched canvas); and a layer of batting sandwiched between them to add depth. Decorative stitching holds the layers together and creates added texture and movement across the surface. Finally, for a more contemporary look, I finish the piece with an edging that is typically not visible from the front.
My second medium is acrylic paint. My paintings and collages are typically explorations of color, texture, and other design elements, applied in multiple layers. I use brushes, brayers, sponges, palette knives, painting wedges, and more, as I play with ways to apply paint to wood panels, stretched canvas and paper. I may also incorporate collage and various mark-making tools, e.g., posca pens, charcoal, oil pastels, gel sticks, and more. Much of what I create is abstract and non-representational, but I also draw inspiration from landscapes - rural, urban, and often imaginary.
