The inspiration for this piece came from Google Calendars. When my daughters were younger, I used to maintain the family calendars, assigning a different color to each of us. This represents a particularly difficult time in which I had to parent one of my daughters 24/7 (represented with green fabric), while the other needed a significant amount of chauffeuring (the purple fabrics.) The few pieces of blue represent my attempt at my own work and the red my personal time. Now that they are older, I still parent, but not in the same intense way. The color balance has shifted, though I have added yellow to represent my elderly mother. The change in this balance is reflected on the back of the quilt, as you can see here. The quilt lines are linear, represented the grid on the calendar.
